Deformation and crustal rigidity of rotating neutron stars

چکیده
Aims. We calculate parameters A and B of the Baym-Pines model of the hydro-elastic equilibrium of rotating neutron stars. Parameter A determines the energy increase of a non-rotating star due to a quadrupolar deformation of its shape. Parameter B determines residual quadrupolar deformation due to the crustal shear strain in a neutron star that spun down to a non-rotating state. Methods. The calculations of A are based on precise numerical 2-D calculations for rotating neutron stars with the realistic equations of state (EOSs) of dense matter. An approximate, but quite precise, formula for B is used, which allows us to separate the contribution of the crust from the dependence on the stellar mass M and radius R. The elastic shear strain distribution within the crust is modeled following Cutler et al. (2003). Realistic EOSs of neutron star cores are used, some of them with high-density softening due to the appearance of hyperons or a phase transition to an exotic state. Results. The values A(M) and B(M) were calculated for 0.2 M⊙ < M < 0.9 Mmax (where Mmax is the maximum allowable mass) for seven EOSs of neutron star core, combined with several crust models. A standard formula based on the incompressible fluid model is shown to severely underestimate the value of A. For M < 0.7 M⊙ the values of A(M) are nearly EOS-independent and are given (within a few percent) by a universal formula A = 3.87 (M/M⊙) 7/3 ×10 erg. We derive the scaling of B with respect to R and M , also valid for a thick crust. We show that B for accreted crust strongly depends on pycnonuclear fusions at ρ > 10 g cm.

متن کاملGravitational waves from rotating neutron stars
In this review we examine the dynamics and gravitational wave detectability of rotating strained neutron stars. The discussion is divided into two halves: triaxial stars, and precessing stars. We summarise recent work on how crustal strains and magnetic fields can sustain triaxiality, and suggest that Magnus forces connected with pinned superfluid vortices might contribute to deformation also. ...
متن کاملCrustal Oscillations of Slowly Rotating Relativistic Stars
We study low-amplitude crustal oscillations of slowly rotating relativistic stars consisting of a central fluid core and an outer thin solid crust. We estimate the effect of rotation on the torsional toroidal modes and on the interfacial and shear spheroidal modes. The results compared against the Newtonian ones for wide range of neutron star models and equations of state.
متن کاملDifferent Magnetic Field Distributions in Deformed Neutron Stars
In this work, we review the formalism which would allow us to model magnetically deformed neutron stars. We study the effect of different magnetic field configurations on the equation of state (EoS) and the structure of such stars. For this aim, the EoS of magnetars is acquired by using the lowest order constraint variational (LOCV) method and employing the AV18 potential....
متن کاملProperties of Rotating Neutron Star
using the nuclear equation of states for a large variety of relativistic and non-relativistic force parameters, we calculate the static and rotating masses and radii of neutron stars. From these equation of states, we evaluate the properties of rotating neutron stars, such as rotational frequencies, moment of inertia, quadrupole deformation parameter, rotational ellipticity and gravitational wa...
